UNTYPICAL TALE

A Story From The Past
Remembered and Written by Ron Ogburn of Ghosts of Adams County

I was born here in Gettysburg and lived just North of town on a small farm my Mom and Dad owned. I always liked the Gettysburg area and was almost heart broken when at age 12, our family moved to Bladensburg, Md. My parents knew how I felt and would get me back to Gettysburg any chance they had. They made sure that almost every weekend for my first summer(1959) I got back to the area to spend the weekend with my Uncle or Grandmother. Lots of weekends, I returned to Gettysburg with the husband of one of my cousins who was stationed at Andrew's Air Force Base. Every weekend there was spent bass fishing along Marsh Creek. My favorite place was Sach's Bridge. A few months ago, I was surfing the net to listen to a few EVP's recorded by other ghost hunters and researchers when I clicked on a recording at the Philadelphia ghost Hunters Alliance website. I think every hair on my body stood on end as I instantly recalled a memory buried deep inside. I never really thought to much about repressed memories until then, but now I know it's possible.

It was early morning and the sun had just inched above the horizon as 3 of us arrived at Sach's Bridge. I was with my cousin's husband and a friend of his. I only wish one of them were still around to help me with the facts of the story. We had been fishing for some time and not having any luck. Chuck walked through the bridge and started down the other side to see if the fishing might be better on the other side. He wasn't gone to long, when he called for the other man with us to come over to his location and I was to stay where I was at. After a few minutes, being 12 years old, curiosity got the best of me. I knew they weren't fishing and my 12 year old mind was thinking all sorts of things. Slowly and quietly I inched across the bridge. As I reached the end of the bridge, Chuck saw me and told me to get back to the other side and gather up my things because we were leaving. Why I repressed this memory will become more evident in a moment when the story unfolds.

We left and returned to my Uncle's house. At that time, he was a constable here in Adams County. My Uncle and the other two men left together, stopped across the road and picked up the County Sheriff. When they returned, I was more than a little curious. I was told everything was OK, nothing happened and if I had seen anything at the bridge, it was nothing but a burned out camp fire. So, being 12, I did just that. I forgot about it and never thought about it again for 40 years.

When I clicked on the EVP at the PGHA sight, it all came back to me and I've been digging for information ever since and coming up empty. What I saw when I reached the path leading down through the woods, was Chuck down beside a large burned out area with a long stick probing into the ashes. Just as I arrived, he pulled what looked like a small child's dress (blue and white checked) from the ashes with the stick. You may listen to the recording that brought this back at the PGHA Recording Sight. The voice on the recording was made at Sach's Bridge by PGHA President Lewis Gerew during the IGHS 1999 Gettysburg Ghost Conference. The recording sure sounds like it says"My Children Burn".

Just a coincidence or did something horrible happen 40 years ago?

You will have to decide.
